The Important Chemical Needed For Survival

August 23, 2008 By: Mr. Fitness Category: Exercise No Comments →

Twenty per cent of our atmosphere is oxygen. When this gas is united chemically with hydrogen gas, the result is water, our body’s most important nutrient.

Water benefits us in many ways. It washes toxins from the body, keeps blood at the right viscosity, maintains body temperature, lubricates and cushions organs, transports nutrients, metabolizes body fat, and does many other things for the body. Water makes up 70%-80% of our body weight.

Everyone needs a minimum of 64 ounces of water per day, and more if you are physically active. Dehydration is the result of not ingesting enough water. When this happens, the body takes water from other places, like the blood.

When the body gets dehydrated, it closes down some of the capillaries. The blood becomes thicker, more likely to clot, and it is harder for the heart to pump it through the systems. This results in high blood pressure, heart disease and high cholesterol. Dehydration has also been linked to heartburn, headaches, and arthritis.

Dehydration is a common problem among Americans, up to 75% of us! The body may seem to be signaling hunger when its real need is water. In fact, even when the stomach is hungry, it can be temporarily satisfied with a drink of water. This helps maintain proper body weight.

Some feel that the coffee, tea, or soft drinks they ingest suffices for the needed water. Actually, they can cause a greater need for water! This is because some contain caffeine which is a diuretic. In other words, they force the water and nutrients out of the cells.

Dehydration is a dangerous problem. Just a 2% drop in body weight caused by a lack of water affects the mind. A 5% drop can affect physical performance as much as 20% to 30%. A 10% drop will be evidenced in actual sickness and a 20% drop will bring death. With water being so important to our health, most people realize the importance of being sure their drinking water is pure.

While a lack of water is often the cause of some ailments, drinking water is likewise also the cure. Problems such as ulcers, stress, headaches, high blood pressure, kidney problems, and problems related to cholesterol are often alleviated by drinking pure water. Just 64 ounces a day of the free liquid have decreased the risk of breast cancer by 79%, bladder cancer by 50%, and colon cancer by 45%.

Perhaps your body is craving water right now and you don’t even know it. So go get a glass. But be sure it is pure first. Water taken from the tap will probably have impurities. So might even bottled water. Best is the water you purify yourself through a charcoal filter like the Black Berkey. You can trust it to help you maintain good health.

One charcoal water filtration system has stood the test of time. Using a gravity filtration method, the Berkey Water Filter is able to filter out a much higher percentage of contaminants than filters where water pressure forces the contaminants through. Learn more about the amazing effectiveness of the Berkey Water Filters, including how they can filter up to 6000 gallons with each included pair of filters.

Over Coming Bone Loss

August 20, 2008 By: Mr. Fitness Category: Exercise No Comments →

When we discuss exercise most individuals immediately think of losing fat and toning or gaining muscle. It is true that with regular exercise you will lose inches and gain strength in muscles but the importance of exercise on a regular basis really offers many more important health benefits then being able to fit into your skinny jeans or being able to flex an impressive looking bicep.

Another extremely important benefit from exercise which is often over looked until problems begin to occur is bone health. Most individuals do not give their bones much thought until they or a loved one is face with the reality of failing bones which can be detrimental because it will ultimately lead to immobility.

All of us reached our maximum bone mass in our twenties and if prevention is not a focus it is down hill from that point on. The important thing to remember is it is never to late to start.

Although there has been a focus on women’s bone health in recent years with the discussion of osteoporosis men are not immune to the adverse affects of bone loss. Women are prone to increased bone loss or osteoporosis during and after menopause caused by the loss of estrogen; at the same time men as they age will also experience increased bone loss associated with the loss of testosterone. Although women in general are more prone to bone disorders such as osteoporosis men are by no means off the hook.

With that being said most bone loss actually occurs from disuse atrophy. Bone tissue is the same as any other tissue in the body; if you do not use it you will lose it. Your body does not waste energy maintaining something that is deemed important or necessary such as muscle or bone that is not worked. It is also important to recognize that the loss of muscle directly affects the health of your bones.

Maintaining lean muscle mass is essential to keeping our bones healthy because this lean muscle puts good stress on our bones that in turn causes them to strengthen or in other words signals the body that our bones are important and need to be maintained. The best way to do this is to incorporate resistance training into your life two or three times a week.

Weight training does fall into the resistance training category however if lifting weights does not appeal to you there are many different options that can be done inside or outside of your home. Resistance training includes any activity that works and strengthens your muscles which in turn put the much needed stress on your bones. The possibilities are endless your workout can include any of the following: Pilates, using resistance bands, using the now popular exercise ball, yoga or simply using your own body weight. Try doing a lunge or yoga pose; when you do you will see that you do not need a fancy gym or tons of equipment to get a workout. The important thing is to find an activity or activities that you enjoy, embrace it and make it a part of your life.

Other important steps that you need to take in order to ensure you have healthy bones are; quit smoking, avoid excess drinking and ensure you are getting adequate amounts of calcium, vitamin D and vitamin K2 in your diet. If you are not getting your daily requirements of the necessary mineral and vitamins then take supplements.

Healthy bones are not always our top priority but by making a few changes to our lifestyle we can help assure we will not only live longer but can enjoy independence and mobility far into our twilight years.

Exercise For Your Health

Why exercise? Exercise although it gets a lot of attention and publicity does not seem to get incorporated into most peoples lives. Every year millions of individuals make the big New Years Resolution that this is the year they are goes to lose weight and get in shape but very few follow through. They focus for many is to drop the pounds for the sake of their appearance when in really the focus should be on health. If everyone made their own health a priority in their own lives weight would no longer be an issue because they both go hand in hand.

The benefits of exercise are vast and really endless and go far beyond be able to fit into your favorite outfit or being able to flex your impressive muscles. If is of course true that exercise in combination with a proper balanced diet will lead to weight loss which is a fantastic result however there is really so much more to be gained that most individuals are not even aware of or that is not at the forefront of our mind.

By regularly incorporating a few exercise activities into your life which both strengthen and stretch your muscles you are gaining extraordinary benefits to your health. I am sure most have heard that muscles burn fat, this is true in the sense that there is a direct correlation between the amount of muscle you have and the rate of your metabolism. The more muscle the higher your metabolism. Exercising also has the added bonus of decreasing your appetite.

In addition exercises that work the muscles; known as resistance training also help to strengthen your bones. By doing these types of exercise puts stress on your bones signaling your body to put effort into rebuilding your bones in those areas. This helps to prevent excess bone loss as we age because in reality with out intervention on our part we begin to loss muscle mass from the point we reach our maximum which is in our twenties.

Exercising will also help alleviate joint pain whether it is in your knees, back, hips, or neck in three ways. The first is the natural weight loss that will occur with exercise, as you lose the weight there is less and less stress being put on your joints. The second is the strengthening of the joints themselves. The third deals with the fact that those individuals who exercise tends to have better posture, for instance back pain in a lot of instances is caused by weak muscles of the back and the abdomen. You will notice shortly after you commit to an exercise routine you posture will improve drastically.

Exercise is also important for heart health as the heart is a muscle it is the same as any our tissue in your body, if you do not use it you will lose it. Anytime you workout and increase your heart rate you are strengthening it and your lungs. In addition exercise benefits cardiovascular system as a whole, as it keeps your blood vessels open and clog free which in turn helps to ward off high blood pressure, high cholesterol (the bad kind), heart attacks and strokes.

Another fabulous benefit of exercise is the fact that it stimulates the release of endorphins. Endorphins are essentially chemicals which stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain. They will make you feel energized and in control (great stress release). This release of endorphins is so strong that exercise is being successfully used to treat many individuals with depression. In addition with exercise, you will begin to feel stronger, more focused, more energetic, less stressed, and will have improved confidence.

The fact is; those individuals who engage in exercise for the sole purpose of weight loss more often then not give it up because at some point they will hit a wall or plateau and frustration sets in. Plateaus do eventually end but the bigger point is that although the scale is not dropping as quickly as you may like you are improving the strengthen and health of your body. Having a strong healthy body is not only beneficial in the present but it is very beneficial as we age and impacts greatly how we are going to age. Make health your focus and the rest will fall into line.

Can Heavy= Lifetime Fitness?

August 16, 2008 By: Mr. Fitness Category: Exercise No Comments →

We all know (or have been told) that being over-weight has a negative impact on our health, which it does. But what we are not told is that you can still be healthy and fit, even if you are packin’ too many pounds (or stones or kilograms-depending on where you live.)

It is well documented in medical journals that obesity can contribute to and/or further impact many disease and health issues, including, but not limited to coronary artery disease, heart attacks, diabetes, arthritis, depression, chronic back pain…the list goes on. Did you know that even with a minimal weight loss of 5% of your total body weight, these risks can significantly be decreased?

For example, weight loss and exercise can decrease a predisposed individual’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58%. Even a weight loss of 10-15 pounds can:
• Reduce blood pressure
• Lower blood sugar
• Improve cholesterol levels
• Lighten the stress on hips, knees, ankles, and feet

Ok, now you say, “I’m too fat, how am I going to exercise to lose weight so that I increase my physical fitness?” That’s very good question, and believe it not, it isn’t difficult.

• First, you must want to change. If the motivation isn’t there, you will fail. So search your heart to see how ready you are to commit to a lifetime of change. If you aren’t ready yet, don’t start, otherwise you will set yourself up for a cycle of failure and depression.

• If you are ready emotionally, the next question is physical readiness. There’s a great online questionanaire available here. health This review will help you know if you should check in with your Family Doctor first, to ask if there any activities that she/he would recommend that you not participate in. Okay, so your doctor gives you a “Thumps-Up,” now what?

I suggest ride a bike. Yes that’s right, I said, “Ride a bike.” It is a great, healthy, safe exercise (providing you know how to ride a bike.) It is a flexible, low cost activity, and easy on your joints. With only 2-3 hours/week (less if have been inactive for a long time) you can make a significant change in your health; not only because of the increase in activity, but also because of the weight loss that is a wonderful secondary benefit. So now you are concerned that you are too heavy to ride a trike. You think, “I could never find a bike to support my weight.”

NOT TRUE!!
There’s a wonderful website that sells bikes for “Supersized” people. Not only do they have bikes that support up to 550 pounds, but they can build a bike to fit you specifically. Check it out! cycle

Just remember, as overwhelmed as you may feel now, we did not get this way overnight, and it isn’t going to be corrected overnight. You’re not alone. Take the first step, decide to change. I did.

Stress Reduction Techniques - Exercise Is Useful

August 12, 2008 By: Mr. Fitness Category: Exercise No Comments →

Many people think that rest is the only thing one can do when he is under stress. However, exercise can also be very beneficial as well. It has been studied and shown to have beneficial effects on the individual’s stress levels when he exercises.

When you exercise, the brain produces a range of biochemicals that work to reduce stress. Athletes constantly experience an ‘endorphin’ rush that accompanies a training workout. The body naturally produces and releases an opiate-like chemical to help reduce the pain that comes with a hard workout. When produced in extremely high levels, it can lead to euphoria.

Endorphins are not the only thing produced during a good workout. Neuro-transmitters - dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin - are also produced and are known as mood elevators. Having low levels of those neuro-transmitters can result in anxiety, depression and occasionally increased aggression. Exercise helps to keep the levels at a point that helps to combat those occurrences.

Not only does exercise produce helpful biochemicals, it helps to reduce biochemicals that are produced by stress. Cortisol and other hormones are produced when someone is suffering from stress. If left in the bloodstream, they are harmful to the body, and can cause a narrowing of the arteries, which can lead to heart conditions.

Exercise produces a two fold benefit. The harmful hormones are broken down during exercise, and can then be passed out of the body with no ill effects. Exercise also helps by increasing blood vessels’ resilience, so that they are less affected by any remaining harmful compounds that may not have broken down during the workout.

Most people will carry stress in their muscles, especially in the neck, shoulder and calf areas. Tension can often be worked out with exercise, especially if you focus on those areas during warm up and cool down stretches. Exercise also strengthens those muscles, and fresh oxygen is carried to them, making tension less likely after the workout. ‘Bad’ cholesterol is also reduced during a workout, so there are many benefits to exercise.

Exercise also has psychological benefits that are helpful in combating stress. When you focus on an exercise routine, your attention is taken away from the problem that is causing you stress. This allows you to take some time away from the problem and do something good for yourself.

The effect this produces is called homeostasis. Your body will be brought back to a state of balance with less troubles. This stops your body from shutting down as it allows your system to function without overloading it.

A regular workout also produces other psychological benefits. Self-confidence increases as health and fitness improves. Looking good usually makes people feel good. You also benefit from knowing that you are actively working to improve your health, and your life. This sense of working actively on something can then be implemented with the problem that is causing stress.

Exercise can be as simple as going for a vigorous walk. This takes you away from the situation that is causing you stress, and allows your body to breakdown any harmful stress related chemicals and produce mood lifting endorphins. To be effective though, exercise should be undertaken three to five times a week, for at least half an hour. This will not only help to keep stress at a low level, your health will improve, and you’ll feel better generally.

Anaerobic Workouts: Pushing Your Limits

August 06, 2008 By: Mr. Fitness Category: Exercise No Comments →

Exercising at a rate to where the blood stream cannot supply oxygen to the muscle fast enough is called anaerobic exercise. Anaerobic exercise simply means exercise without oxygen. Lactic acid builds up in your muscles in an oxygen deprived environment. Large amounts of lactic acid are produced when your muscles exercise in an oxygen deprived environment. Muscle failure is created as lactic acid builds up at a rate faster than it can be removed.

Anaerobic exercise does not refer to respiration as a whole, but rather to anaerobic muscle respiration. The muscle will still get oxygen, but it will not be sufficient to meet the activity’s demands. Anaerobic threshold or lactate threshold are terms for anaerobic capacity. These terms describe the point during anaerobic exercise when lactic acid accumulates faster than it is removed from the muscle. It is possibly one of the superior indicators in determining athletic performance.

An athlete with a lower VO2Max but higher anaerobic threshold would be able to go further faster without experiencing muscle failure than an athlete with high VO2Max and a low anaerobic threshold, who has traditionally been considered more fit. With training, your anaerobic threshold can be improved. Activities requiring brief spurts of high intensity activity are called anaerobic sports and they are football, basketball, rugby, hockey, and soccer. Any activity requiring brief spurts of high intensity activity is considered an anaerobic sport. An anaerobic workout would include something like weight lifting or quick Interval Training.

Your anaerobic threshold can be improved with training but this requires an exercise which allows you to spend an extended period of time above your anaerobic threshold. An exercise routine that can achieve this is HIIT. High Intensity Interval Training allows you to spend a long cumulative time in an anaerobic state by alternating high intensity activities with periods of rest and recovery.

Find A Safe Weight Training Program

July 31, 2008 By: Mr. Fitness Category: Exercise No Comments →

A consideration to keep in mind when deciding on a Weight Training Program is whether or not it is safe for you to perform while at the same time being an efficient workout for your body.

Muscle Building Program
While workouts to gain muscle are all the rage these days, injuries incurred from people doing workouts to build muscle have generally been on the rise. When a person is thinking to themselves “what is a good muscle building workout?”, the usual answer that they give themselves has nothing to do with the safety issues involved with the workout.

They look only for the best muscle building workout routine from the point of view of results, and not necessarily the safest or even the technically best one, but the one that others appear to have benefited from. To truly benefit from muscle building workouts, you need to do them safely. Here are some tips to get you started.

- Follow the advice of the muscle building workouts you choose exactly and pay close attention to the advice that they give on preventing injuries during the workout. This is usually done through a warm-up, which you MUST NOT SKIP! Skipping the warm-up can only hurt you later on when you are doing the exercises and therefore to ensure your own personal well-being during the actual workout, make sure you follow the instructions the workout gives you to the letter.

- Try to choose a workout that is specifically suited to people of your particular stripe (very much in shape, overweight, light exercise history) and try to avoid workouts that are too advanced for your current situation.

- Work your core muscle groups first in workouts and then once you have built those up you are much more likely to be able to do any workout you want without having to worry about the possibility of getting injured.

The safest of all of course would be something along the lines of fat loss 4 idiots where energetic working out is not required to lose weight. In this case you can lose weight from diet alone.

However, if you really want to make vigorous exercise a part of your life then consider one of the well known programs along the lines of the body for life training program. Body-for-Life Exercise routines employ a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) approach referred to as the High Point Technique (TM). The technique is used for both Body-for-Life cardio exercise and for Body-for-Life weight training.

The workouts have the benefit of being short and efficient, but the intensity can take some getting used to. The idea is to work your way up to a High Point, which is close to or equal to your best effort. This cycle is repeated in intervals several times during each Body-for-Life workout. Read the Body for Life book carefully and pay particular attention to the pages describing the exercises themselves. Observe the instructions and stay safe when training!
