Does Glutamine Work

August 07, 2008 By: Mr. Fitness Category: Nutrition No Comments →

GLUTAMINE ( L-Glutamine )

“ The Anti-Catabolic Free-Form Amino Acid “

If you’re serious about maximizing muscle size, growth and density - you must supplement with the amino acid GLUTAMINE. amino acids is the most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue. It serves a crucial role in the human body, especially for strength athletes.

In order for muscle mass to be truly maximized, high levels of glutamine must be maintained AT ALL TIMES… If not, muscle mass will shrink! Most “shrinkage” of muscle mass occurs when the glutamine levels available in muscle tissue are drawn upon by other systems in the body ( primary system that cannibalizes stored muscle glutamine is the immune system ).

The immune system of the human body thrives on glutamine so that it can “manufacture” disease fighting elements. When it is time to fight a “cold” - muscle mass takes a back seat - and must sacrifice glutamine stores to bolster the immune system ( that is why many body builders and strength athletes feel weak and “Flat” and actually look smaller while training with a “bug/cold”.

Even more demands for glutamine are activated by periods of brutal and intense physical and mental stress ( such as training in the gym ). All take their toll on glutamine stores. The good news is that glutamine stores can easily be restored, and even elevated in order to promote good health and anabolic muscle growth. Clinical studies indicate that by supplementing with glutamine, one can replace declining levels of glutamine brought on by periods of physical and mental stress or immune system taxation.

A. Does the particular mangosteen juice product have Independent testing, to show:

1) How many Xanthones are in the supplement.

2) How many Phytonutrients in the Supplement.

3) ORAC Value, which is the measurement of an antioxidant’s power to neutralize free radicals - Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. The higher this value in your blood, the more free radicals will be neutralized.

What you think is a ‘cheaper’ supplement may be a lot more expensive when the mangosteen juice supplement comparison carefully.

Healthy Diet - Baby Boomers Stay Healthy

July 24, 2008 By: Mr. Fitness Category: Nutrition No Comments →

As our bodies age, our metabolism tends to slow as our activity levels reduce and it is not uncommon to get a bit of a tummy. Stomach acid and saliva production are reduced making it more difficult for the body to process food. As a result, we are less able to obtain the nutrition from the foods we eat. In particular, we can easily become deficient in vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid. As well, many enzymes and coenzymes that are essential building blocks of the body or digestive aids, are produced in far fewer numbers or in some cases are not produced at all. This can all sound a bit too scary, but don’t worry. There are some simple steps you can follow to keep you healthy and your body functioning at optimal level.

You know that it is essential to eat a healthy and balanced breakfast but it is easy to forget to look after yourself the way you have looked after others. A light healthy breakfast including fresh fruit, whole grain cereal such as oatmeal, toast and juice (or a cup of tea or coffee) can give you a healthy and enjoyable start to the day.

For a mid-morning snack, enjoy more fruit perhaps alongside some cheese. If you want to get creative you can create a kebab made of strawberries, cheese and grapes. As you get older, your digestion will thank you if you eat smaller meals more frequently. This not only increases metabolism and helps the absorption of nutrition, it also evens out blood sugar and stops you from getting hungry.

A good, healthy lunch can include salads, healthy wraps, or soups. However, it might be a good idea to avoid creamy soups since milk products can cause flatulence as we age. The reason for this is likely to be because of a reduction in the production of lactase as we age so we are less able to digest milk sugar. Undigested lactose can cause diarrhea as well as flatulence. When cheese is aged more than sixty days, it contains very little lactose, so you may be able to tolerate it and obtain needed calcium if you otherwise cannot consume dairy products.

As you age, if you begin to show signs of food allergies that you never had before, they may not be food allergies at all. If your body is not able to properly digest certain foods, the symptoms can mimic those of some allergies. For example, gluten intolerance can cause real health problems that can often go undetected unless a physician asks the right questions. Wheat and many grain products contain gluten.

To make sure your body is supplied with all the essential vitamins and minerals it needs to properly function, it is important to take a good quality daily supplement. Many companies sell combination of vitamins and minerals designed specifically for older people. Capsules are more easily absorbed than tablets. You can also purchase enzymes and coenzymes. CoQ10 is a coenzyme that is usually made by the human body and has been found to benefit people with damaged hearts, the onset of Alzheimer’s or taking cholesterol lowering medication.

As you get older, try to keep your intake of processed sugar to a minimum. This means sugar in tea or coffee, cakes, cookies, and sweets. Satisfy your craving for sweets with fruit and you will be rewarded with good health and improved fitness. If you eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly, you will have more energy and feel a great deal better. Exercise can be as simple as going for a walk or having a swim.

More than anything, it is important to be positive, happy and enjoy life. Maintain an active life and stay interested in people and life in general. By simply changing your approach to healthy diet, you can develop a new outlook to life. You can learn new healthier recipes, create interesting healthy menus and begin to enjoy food in a different way. baby boomers changed the way youth was viewed and experienced. Are you ready to change the future of aging with great nutrition?

The organic iodine acts as a thyroxin precursor and regulates the metabolism. Kelp can supply daily requirements of carotenoids, vitamins A, B1, 2, 6 & 12 and D and pantothenic acid. Kelp has properties that expel intestinal worms, making it useful for both animals and humans.
Kelp uniquely tops the list for the following nutrients: calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, iodine, and is also very high in sulfur. It contains chlorophyll. Kelp contains naturally chelated minerals. It contains the only natural source of vegetable vitamin D. It also contains 25 vitamins including folic acid, vitamins A, B12 and D, often lacking in vegetarian diets.Kelp contains sodium alginate which actively helps remove radioactive elements and heavy metals from the body. It contains sterols which are reported to exhibit anti-hypercholesterolemic activity as has B- Sitosterol in humans.
Sea vegetables, like kelp, provide organic iodine, which is crucial as a nutrient when taken internally. These natural sources of iodine are essential for a healthy thyroid. Kelp in particular, with its balance of natural iodine with other minerals, vitamins and trace elements, is considered a body balancer, promoting adrenal, pituitary and thyroid health. The bio-availability of organic iodine in liquid kelp can assist in:
” normalizing thyroid disorders,
” obesity and lymph system congestion.
” detoxifies and eliminates heavy metals and toxins,
” very effective in helping to purify the blood.
” weight loss
Liquid kelp is used effectively for weight loss by aiding in eliminating excess stores of fat and fluids. It’s easily absorbed organic minerals and trace minerals provide energy and stamina, while organic vitamins boost the immune system and act as viral protectors.
Seaweed’s natural digestive enzymes help the body’s metabolic and digestive systems with assimilation. Organic Liquid kelp is soothing to a sensitive or troubled digestive system, aiding greatly in treating recurrent constipation and gastric bloating.

Kelp or seaweed in general are potentially adequate sources of vitamin B-12 for vegans. Vegitarians consuming seaweeds had serum vitamin B-12 concentrations twice as high as those not using seaweeds. On the basis of the results we conclude that some seaweeds consumed in large amounts can supply adequate amounts of bioavailable vitamin B-12. Kelp also protects the body against the absorption of radiation.
Seawater itself has antibiotic and healing properties. Algae in the sea have properties related to the seawater’s medicinal powers, which may explain why marine products have fungicidal, anti-tumor, anti-viral, anti-biotic, hemolytic, analgesic, cardio-inhibitory and other properties. It is also interesting to note that seawater contains dissolved bromine, a compound used in many sedatives. Seaweed also contains antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties.

Going Nuts - Your Cracked Up Nutrition Advantage

July 17, 2008 By: Mr. Fitness Category: Nutrition No Comments →

About 15 years ago scientists were critical of nuts and their place in nutrition. All that was known about them was that they were high in fats and high in calories, so they were written off as a fast way to gain weight and probably were bad for your arteries. Since then, however, we have learned much more about nuts, and better understand how they interact with the body, and the conclusions we have drawn about them are completely different from our previous thoughts.

Nuts are a food that is high in both fat and calories, but that information alone is misleading, and due to our better understanding of fat, we now know that this is not sufficient reason to avoid nuts. Most of the fat content in nuts happens to come from monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which do not contribute to weight gain as much as other fats and are much better for the body. Furthermore, these types of fats have been shown to have the ability to decrease bad LDL cholesterol, making nuts good for the heart. Studies have been done on the relationship between nuts and heart health, and the results show that a regular diet consisting of nuts can actually lower your chances for developing heart-related disease by as much as thirty-five percent.

Nuts are plentiful sources of protein. Proteins are necessary for the body’s day-to-day function, and are also difficult to obtain in a vegetarian diet, because most plants only contain pieces of proteins. Nuts, however, are sources of complete proteins, making them a wonderful addition to vegetarian diet, but also ideal for a cardiovascular-minded diet. Unlike meats and other conventional producers of protein, nuts are actually beneficial for the heart instead of being damaging.

Nuts are terrific sources of energy. Protein is an important ingredient for energy, and when combined with the other minerals in nuts make them perfect for providing longer, more constant energy levels. In addition to proteins, nuts also happen to rich in the powerful antioxidants selenium and vitamin E. Anti-oxidants have recently been identified as having powerful anti-aging effects on the body due to their ability to block the damage caused by free-radicals, substances that contribute to early aging.

On studies involving nuts in daily diet, results showed that nearly all forms of nuts had similar effects, though the most beneficial nuts today are generally considered to be peanuts, almonds, and cashews. These studies also suggest that a good daily dosage of nuts be between 1 to 2 ounces to see receive the best benefit. While they are very healthy, nuts can be a rather addicting snack, and combined with their elevated levels of calories can cause weight gain if you don’t exercise a little discipline with your snacking. Fortunately, nuts also satisfy hunger very well.

The view of nuts in regard to health has changed drastically in the past 18 years as more has been discovered about their true potential. Adding an ounce or two of nuts to your daily diet can have a very positive impact on your health, especially where your heart is concerned. Just make sure you keep in mind that they are a high-calorie food, and when you add nuts to your diet, it is generally best to substitute another food for them instead of adding them onto the side. Where they were once feared as a weight-gain nightmare, we now know that these foods are especially beneficial to the body, as long as you don’t go overboard with them.

Are You At Risk For Cardiovascular Disease

July 15, 2008 By: Mr. Fitness Category: Nutrition No Comments →

The leading health problem in the world today is
cardiovascular disease. It claims more than one million lives every year. Because of the narrowing of blood vessels the heart is unable to maintain an adequate amount of blood circulation through the body. This inadequacy of the heart and blood vessels is called heart disease or cardiovascular disease.
Heart Health is making sure that the heart and blood vessels have the necessary nutrients to keep them strong and working properly. The blood vessels have to be soft and plaque free.

There are different types of cardiovascular disease.

Coronary Heart Disease, is caused by the accumulation of fatty deposits along the innermost layer of coronary arteries. This thickening narrows the arteries and can lesson or eventually block the flow of blood to the heart..
Symptoms may include pain in the chest and /or heaviness, tightness and pressure. .

A heart attack happens when the heart muscle lacks oxygen. this occurs when there is a blockage of blood flow to the heart, robbing it of oxygen, and therefore robbing the rest of the body as well. most times this is caused by a build up of cholesterol and other fatty substances in the arteries.. If this lack of oxygen happens for a prolonged time , it damages or kills off the heart muscle cells in the area that was cut off , and this causes that area to malfunction.
Symptoms may include .Severe chest pains, that may not recede even with rest, severe pressure and squeezing in the centre of the chest, pain in the shoulders ,neck, arms or the jaw, sweating, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, and indigestion.

Congestive Heart failure is another type of heart disease. It is when the heart is not supplying the other organs of the body with enough oxygenated blood, and can be the result of high blood pressure, high sodium intake, heart valve disease, previous heart attacks ,to name a few.
Symptoms include, weight gain, swelling of legs and ankles, shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of appetite and nausea, persistent cough.

Yet another type of cardiovascular disease can be the result of malfunctioning heart valve

1.When the heart valves malfunction, it prevents the flow of blood in and out of the heart. This is called Heart Valve Disease. This can be due to damage from a previous heart attack.
Symptoms include chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, migraines and dizziness.

Angina is when a part of the heart is not receiving enough blood. It is identified by recurring chest pain. It is a symptom of coronary heart disease.
Symptoms include squeezing or crushing pain in the chest, pain in the arms, shoulders, jaw, neck and back.

Doctors must diagnose correctly if one is to receive proper and beneficial treatment for heart disease. Some common methods for diagnosing heart disease are, electrocardiogram(EKG), where a set of sensory pads are placed on strategic areas of your chest and a record of the heart’s beating patterns are recorded.

Another method is the Stress Electrocardiogram(Stress EKG), where one is put under physical stress , like running on a treadmill, where abnormalities in the beat of the heart are recorded.
Angiocardiography is another method which is used to diagnose the condition of the arteries. A catheter is inserted into the artery and dye is released into the blood stream. Blockages and other abnormalities are discovered on a monitor, by observing the dye flowing through the arteries.

It is always best to have a heart check up every year as part of the normal annual check up regardless of age, as heart disease can strike at any time.
